Serious Gaps in Hearing Protection – How Progressa Can Help
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently published findings highlighting serious
gaps in how UK employers protect workers from excessive noise. Their inspection
campaign found:
75% of employees lacked essential knowledge about storing, checking and reporting
faults in their hearing protection.
63% had not been told that hearing protection must be worn continuously in harmful
noise areas.
80% had received no training on how to wear protection correctly (for example,
interference from hair, headgear or other PPE).
95% of employers had not checked whether hearing protection still allowed workers to hear vital alarms or warning signals.
This problem is not confined to “loud” industries. While construction sites and factories
remain high-risk, call centre staff using headsets and office workers exposed to prolonged
noise can also suffer hearing damage. In short, hearing loss is a hidden risk across many
workplaces – and once it happens, it’s permanent.
